Non-GMO Bumble Bar Review

Bumble Bars are nutritious, organic, certified gluten free, healthy, digestive-friendly energy bars made mostly of sesame, sunflower, and/or flax seeds.

With the exciting healthy and safe ingredients in Bumble Bars, let's just jump right into pointing out the good stuff:

GMO free
Ethically Sourced
Kid Approved (IMO, especially the chocolate flavor.)
 Vegan Approved
 Organic Energy
Sesame Snack Bars

About Bumble Bar:
BumbleBar has been the original organic, vegan, gluten free, ethically sourced sesame bar since 1995. Still handcrafted in small batches by a company that follows the People, Planet, Profit business model.

So far, the Bumble Bars have become one of my favorite bars as far as satisfying a sweet craving and feeling truly satisfied after eating goes.

I'm also super fond of the health benefits of the ingredients. Flax and sunflower seeds are healthy, filling, and beneficial for the digestive system. Really beneficial. If you're like me and suffer with digestive issues like IBS-D, then I say these are a perfect way to get the benefits of flax seeds!

I also think these are absolutely one of the best ways to... how should I put this? As the commercials on TV put it, "regulate you." Seriously, these healthy snack bars, probably due to the seeds, are the real deal if you have trouble in that area.

I won't go any farther on that topic.

The different (and awesomely unique) Bumble Bar flavors include:
Original Peanut, Chocolate Crisp, Amazing Almond, Lushus Lemon, Chai Almond, Classic Cashew, Chunky Cherry, Harvest Hazelnut, Awesome Apricot, Mixed Nut Medley, Paradise Pineapple, Cherry Chocolate, Chocolate Mint, and Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Gotta love the variety of unique flavors available, especially since they help keep you from getting bored or burned out on the same flavors, although it's possible that I'd be able to eat the same flavor of these everyday forever and never get burned out with them.

TASTE:
So far, most of the bars taste a lot like honey and seeds. The sweet flavor is like that of  honey.

The chocolate and peanut butter bar are somewhat similar to the taste of a brownie, and the peanut butter flavor wasn't very noticeable to me. It mostly tastes of a hint of chocolate.

The bars, and their flavors are very simple yet totally satisfying.

Amazing Almond has delicious slivers of almonds in it, along with the same crispy rice that the Chocolate Crisp has. I'm really fond of that since as it gives the bars a crunch and more texture. I absolutely love almonds (and most nuts. Edible ones, that is) Bonus: almonds are a source of energy, so they're perfect in the Bumble Bar energy bars.

Cashew: Is pretty much exactly like the almond, only with a couple cashew slivers thrown in. I'm a major cashew-lover, so of course, these were great.

Lushus Lemon has an absolutely divine aroma of lemon. I basically inhaled that one! It has a sweet, lemon-y flavor that could easily be a favorite among lemonade or lemon-drop lovers like myself. I love a fruity bar of any type, and this totally fulfills my craving of a fruity, sweet snack.
This is the Lushus Lemon Bumble Bar. All the flavors I've mentioned look almost exactly alike, slightly differing where there's almonds, rice, and chocolate.

Chai Almond was has a very different (if not somewhat odd)  flavor from anything I've eaten. It's kind of spicy, and of course sweet at the same time. I didn't taste the almonds so much in this one as with the Amazing Almond.

So far, my favorites have been the Chocolate Crisp, Amazing Almond, Peanut, and Lushus Lemon.

Satisfying and Filling:

As most of us know, a lot of sweets and junk foods in general, leave us only wanting more. It's almost like the more you eat of it, the more your body begs for more of it. Yet if you simply want to get rid of that nagging sweet-craving, so you indulge thinking you'll only have one cookie.

Until you're reminded that one isn't ever enough. Then, you're reaching into the bottom of the container only to realize you've completely over-done it, and now you're bloated and feeling yucky, but something inside of you is still screaming "but I'm not fully satisfied just yet. Just one more!"

It's an ugly, vicious, never-ending cycle, and I've been determined for several months now to kick its behind.

Naturally, as I hunted down more and more healthy alternatives to these outrageous sweet-food cravings I get, I finally ended up being turned on to these Bumble Bars. When one of you readers described them to me, I was intrigued from then on, and eventually became more and more interested in trying them out for myself that the awesome, kind folks at Bumble Bar agreed to collaborate with me, giving me an opportunity to try them for myself.

I'm a big fan of "bars." I could live off granola bars, cereal bars, and snack bars and those super-filling protein bars found in gas-stations. I haven't ever came across any "bar" that I didn't absolutely love, even the peanut butter ones I made myself and posted the recipe for a while back.

I wasn't surprised that I fell in love with the Bumble Bars. But I was surprised that the bars -- made mostly of packed-together seeds that have some flavoring to sweeten them -- were so satisfying to me and my vicious cravings.

I'm glad that every night, as my sweet-tooth kicks in and starts screaming at me to stop working and start devouring any sugar-laden product in sight, so far I've been able to replace the junk with one Bumble Bar and be completely satisfied, the screaming craving calmed.

This is quite rare for me. In fact, I can't think of any other sweet that does actually leave me feeling satisfied and not hunting for more before the night is over.

It's extremely rare for me to feel that I've fully satisfied my sweet craving (and you guys know I've tried virtually every sweet-junk-food alternative and every healthy option out there.) I find that one Bumble Bar leaves me completely satisfied and not thinking about how I want more.

I love the natural taste of these and that I can eat a Bumble Bar, feel decently satisfied as far as hunger goes and not feel all crappy after having one. Other sweets tend to leave me feeling bloated and just not well after I indulge, but the natural, healthy ingredients of Bumble Bars don't.

You really notice a difference in the "fullness" you feel after eating a healthy, natural food than the not-so-satisfaction you get as a result of eating unhealthy ones. I can even eat an entire fast food meal and it's like my stomach begins to get a bloated sensation more than the true "full" sensation that comes with natural, cleaner eating.

That, and the fact that the bars are filling as a snack are my favorite things about the Bumble Bars.

Aside from that, I love that the bars are basically just flax and sunflower seeds. I was super surprised that they were filling at all. I didn't expect a bunch of seeds to be filling, but I can eat one Bumble Bar on an empty stomach and it quietens my hunger pretty decently for a good while. I can usually hold off eating a huge meal if I will just have a Bumble Bar an hour or less before I go into a meal.

With that said, I feel like these bars could be a sort of  alternative to deterring from sugar-laden, unhealthy snacks as well as possibly an aid for portion control. I tend not to pig out so much if I've eaten a Bumble Bar within an hour before a meal.

All the different Bumble Bar flavors can be found and purchased here.

P.S. Needing extra protein and don't mind a few extra calories from peanut butter? Add a slather of it (or Nutella... Yum!) over the bars before chowing down. Also a perfect way to get kids to eat them, if they're weird about seed-bars, which I doubt they will be.

Just Almonds -- Almond Flour and Sugar Cookie Recipe

Just Almonds sell almonds with no preservatives or artificial flavors, they're gluten-free, kosher certified, freshness guaranteed almonds. All of their almond products are 100% natural California almonds, or made from 100% natural California almonds if it's the Almond Meal or Almond Flour.

The bag of almonds shown above are also from Just Almonds, the Almond Flour is shown and discussed below. Their almonds are very delicious. Some people use almonds and blend them to make their own almond flour, so you can do that if you really wanted to do it for the experiment, but you can make it easier and just buy the almond flour from Just Almonds. I love almonds and eat a handful here and there frequently. They're one of my favorite snacks. I took some of the almonds from the bag and put them in the oven (on 350) for a few minutes since they taste delicious that way too.

What is Almond Meal?
Almond Meal is ground up almonds (Just Almonds grounds to the finest grain possible). What you see here in my photos is the Almond Flour.

Photo of the almond flour, straight from the package.

What is it used for?
Baking of course. But also for other cooking and even for nut butter! You can use Almond Meal (or the Almond Flour, which I'll explain the differences very shortly) in place of regular corn meal to bake with. Almonds have great nutritious value, so when you are consuming them (in ground up, powdery form or as whole pieces) you're getting the health benefits & nutrition that almonds offer. Some people use it for increased flavor, nutrition benefits, taste and even so they know they're using a safe, non-chemically-infused product to bake with and such (since many of the corn meals and stuff available contain chemicals and other harmful preservatives.)

What's the difference between Almond Meal and Almond Flour?

Just Almonds has both Almond Meal and Almond Flour. The difference is that Almond Meal is ground with the skin and Almond Flour is ground without the skin, which means it'll be white in color. Personally, the skin does not affect how I look at the quality of a product.  I ain't bothered by a little color in my foods, so it's not important to me, but it may be to you.
Despite those uses for Almond Flour and Almond Meal, there are people (ahem me!) who take an interest in using the product for health reasons! Here I go. You know when I get on a health talkin' kick I don't shut up, so bear with me while  I try and briefly get to the point. I'll list some of the health reasons for using Almond Meal and/or Almond Flour (this part excites me):

- Many people use Almond Meal/Almond Flour for their wheat allergies, Celiac disease, Crohn's disease, IBS (that's me!), and other gluten-free diets.

See! I told you I'd be brief.

Not so fast though.

Besides being great for those like me with conditions that tend to flare up with certain foods (which I definitely have gained some serious healing in this area since I started making such huge changes), almonds also contain essential fatty acids, which are more important than you might think! I just recently learned how important myself.

Almond Flour has a consistency similar to corn meal rather than wheat flour.
Almond Flour is great for people who are watching their glycemic index as well as other health-conscious, almond-lovin' folks!

-Low in carbs and sugars.
-High in protein.

Uses of almond flour and almond meal
Almond flour is good in "quick-bread" type recipes, like muffins, nut breads, and pancakes.  It's not good for foods such as bread that require a real dough (you can't knead it). Usually, more eggs are required when baking with almond meal to provide more structure.

P.S. Just Almonds does recommend keeping the Almond Flour/Meal refrigerated.

And now I'm going to show you what I made with the almond flour! I'll also list the recipe and give exact instructions of how I went about this.

Sugar Cookies from Almond Flour! (Otherwise known as some of the best tasting sugar cookies ever!)

Since I'm a very new cook and know very little, and because I had very little ingredients, I figured a simple sugar cookie would be my best bet to start off with rather than trying to make something more complicated. I did have to improvise mostly because after getting all my ingredients ready, I spent 30 minutes tearing the kitchen apart looking for the non-existant mixer. Lovely. It seems someone has stolen our mixer! So thankfully, I had my lovie on hand who was happy to put his mixing skills to use. He's good with his hands and is used to mixing paint almost daily, so he can almost double as a mixer. Moving on...

Ingredients I used:
1 teaspoon baking soda.
1 teaspoon flour. (I'd figured the almond flour would be a replacement for flour, but upon looking through different recipes for sugar cookies, it seemed I either needed to add a bit of flour to help it rise or find baking powder. That was where I got confused. I didn't know there was a difference between baking soda and baking powder and all the recipes I found called for both! So I was told I could add a teaspoon of all purpose flour to compensate.)
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Half a cup of butter (softened.)
1 cup white sugar.
1 egg.
1 teaspoon of salt.

*You'll also need a mixer. Like I said, I went looking for mine only to realize it was gone (ahem, stolen), so Brozon done the mixing by hand. This will cause the cookies to be kind of crunchy -- sort of like when you drink coffee or something with sugar and it isn't fully dissolved so you have the crunchy sugar granules. This wasn't a problem for us as we don't mind some crunchy. Plus, the cookies still turned out delicious.

*Of course nuts or other things are optional. We stuck with simple sugar cookies, no extras. While mixing everything up though, I realized you could even add a tablespoon or so of peanut butter for peanut butter cookies!

Instructions I went by:

1. Stir flour, baking soda and baking powder in one bowl. Set aside. Remember, I didn't have baking powder, only baking soda, so I used a teaspoon of flour (all-purpose) to compensate.

2. "Cream" together butter and sugar until smooth. "Cream" apparently means use a mixer. Again, mine was missing, so Brozon did it by hand.

3.   Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Gradually blend the ingredients.

4. Roll tablespoons of dough into balls, place on cookie sheet and into the oven.

5. Bake on 350 for 8-10 minutes.

Ingredients mixed

Here's where ended up needing to improvise, once again. You can't use your hands like you normally would to roll balls of dough, so you dip them out by the spoon. I did that and put it in a pan, then in the oven. After a few minutes, I checked them and they'd turned into one big cake! No big deal since we weren't going for looks or anything.

After a couple more minutes though, it was turning into a very thin layer of my ingredients in the pan. I didn't like that, and worried since the top of the "cake" was turning brown quickly and the inner part was still very runny/liquidy,  so about 6 minutes into baking, I turned down the heat to 315 and began scraping the dough all to one side. That worked out much nicer for me because after 8 minutes, they were turning out better -- not liquidy on the middle and brown on top. I was worried the top would burn too.

After 9 minutes of baking, I started dipping out the mixture onto tin foil and rolling into balls -- well, close to balls. They're a little mishaped, but again, looks aren't a big deal since it's my first time.

Then we actually had cookies instead of a cake! The top layer that had been browning was a bit crunchy and the middle was left slightly chewy, which is my favorite. However, you can always stick em' back in the oven for a minute if you didn't want them to be chewy at all.

Here are the photos of how they turned out:

You can tell I really haven't worried about cooking pretty, by the looks of both the cookies and the pan! But who cares about beauty when something tastes so delicious? I'm sure you more experienced bakers could do much nicer work, but this is how it came out for me, and I wanted to share that. I know, I got picture-happy, but I couldn't resist!

I definitely recommend trying sugar cookies made with almond flour! They're some of the most delicious cookies I've ever tasted. The almond flour sort of gives them a nutty taste, which is unique compared to your typical sugar cookie.

As you might have guessed, Just Almonds does sell other almond products like... Almonds! Aha! Did you guess that? I happen to have some of Just Almonds' almonds too (that's tough to say out loud!)

If you look at my earlier, top photo of the Almond Flour, you'll see the package it comes in -- a sealed (re-sealable) bag. The almonds themselves come in the same type of bag and each have a nutrition label on the back, as well as package date and expiry date (both my flour and almonds say packaged Feb. 2013 and Expires: Feb. 2013.)

A note from Just Almonds' website:

"All of our products are shipped from the current crop and ship directly from the farm without repackaging the product or mixing it with other types of nuts (peanuts for example)."

And ...
"Our ranch is located in the heart of the Central Valley of California, and our almonds ship straight from our ranch. We take great pride in offering the highest quality California almonds and the friendliest customer service."

Recipes!
You can find tons of wonderful recipes for using Almond Flour/Meal on Just Almonds website. P.S. I definitely recommend looking at the Almond Butter recipe! If you want to look at their recipes, here's the link. The Almond Butter is super easy to make, requires very little to nothing extra (besides almonds of course! And blender or food processor.) My partner and I have been really interested in making and trying the Almond Butter, so we had to try that one first. That is what I did since I'm not creative where baking is concerned & I decided to make...

Organic Excellence Body Wash, Shampoo & Conditioner

Organic Excellence products are chemical, GMO, gluten and fragrance free. Organic Excellence provides a safe, healthy alternative to skin, bath and body products. They use high-quality ingredients that include herbs and beneficial vitamins and nutrients. As they say, Organic Excellence is “your chemical-free healthy choice since 1999!”

What I love about Organic Excellence’s Spearmint Body Wash :

 - Contains certified organic ingredients & herbs! I love skin products that have helpful ingredients instead of harmful ones & herbs are so beneficial for skin.

-No harmful chemicals, sulfates or harsh detergents.

- No Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate, which are the ingredients used for the lathering and foaming action, but they’re so harmful that it’s best to not use them.

-“Certified organic herbs help improve tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation and gently exfoliate to reveal younger looking, brighter skin.”

Ingredients

Purified Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Spearmint Oil*, Walnut Husk*, Fennel Extract*, Hops Extract, Chamomile Extract*, Balm Mint Extract, Mistletoe Extract*, Yarrow Extract, Citric Acid, Olive Leaf Extract*, Ginger Extract*, Milk Thistle Extract*, Sage Extract*, Rosemary Extract*, Grape Seed Extract*. *Certified Organic Herb

Since Organic Excellence’s shampoos and soaps don’t contain sulfates, there’s less lathering/foaming, so this is a little different if you're used to a lathery shower gel. You may even find yourself using a lot more product than you expect until you get used to it. But this doesn’t affect the benefits or the use of the product in any negative way. In fact, I prefer sulfates-free soap products.

The Spearmint Body Wash is safe for all skin types and can be used on your body and face.

The Spearmint Body wash is a clear, gel-like wash with small flecks of herbs. You may be able to see in my photo above. I wanted to give ya'll an idea of what it looked like.

It has a minty smell, which is pleasant since the mint smell is associated with cleanliness. It isn’t strong and cleans my skin without lingering on my body strongly. I like this because it means it won’t overpower any perfume I may use.

After using the Spearmint Body Wash, my skin is soft and smooth instead of dried out, which is what I get with other soaps. This organic body wash is an amazing alternative to drugstore soaps, and even more amazing for people with skin problems since the chemicals in most drugstore soaps play a huge factor in your skin. Most skin issues are made worse or even caused especially from the harmful ingredients in soaps.

My family and I know the truth in this, especially one of the kids who had terrible issues with his skin. His hands were raw and bloody from irritation and what looked like psoriasis, which none of us have ever had before. When I switched to all natural soaps, every one of us started seeing major changes. His hands are not raw or bloody. They’re totally normal! The 7 year old was suffering from UTI’s all due to the soaps she was using – soaps that were made for kids! This just goes to show that just because it says “for kids” or “for sensitive skin” means absolutely nothing unless the ingredients can back it up.

When she began having UTI’s, I knew she had to have been using soap with fragrance and/or glycerin, which is the number one cause of UTI’s and some yeast infections. She too started using the natural soaps & hasn’t had a single problem since. If you suffer from problems like this, I cannot stress enough the importance of changing the soaps you use! You will see a difference, I promise.

I know, I never shut up, but I want to share this because it’ll be important for at least some person out there.

My twin sister has suffered from UTI’s and severe kidney problems (kidney stones, etc.) for as long as we can remember. I remember her having a UTI as young as four years old. Now in our adult years, nothing had changed. She was still suffering all the time. I hounded her for months about the bar soap she was using. I finally gave her some of the natural body wash and she said she hasn’t even felt the typical UTI symptoms that she was suffering from even when she didn’t have a full-blown infection.

The Spearmint Body Wash has glycerin obtained from vegetable sources, which is safer and less likely to cause UTI’s and yeast infections than glycerin you see in drugstore brands – synthetic glycerin.

And if you thought your showering routine wouldn't be complete without an organic shampoo and conditioner, there's good news! Organic Excellence also has the organic Wild Mint Shampoo and the organic Wild Mint conditioner! Now you can rejoice.

Here's photos of samples of both the organic shampoo and conditioner.

The Wild Mint Shampoo

The Wild Mint Conditioner

So now that you've seen the samples of the Wild Mint Shampoo and Wild Mint Conditioner, I'll explain some things about them and then tell the results of using them.

The Wild Mint Shampoo and the Wild Mint Conditioner are both organic and chemical free -- as all Organic Excellence products are.

The reason I like the Wild Mint shampoo and conditioner so much is because they're organic, a wonderful alternative to your typical drugstore shampoos and conditioners, which contain loads of harmful ingredients.

Besides being so much healthier for your hair (and you), there's a little more difference between Organic Excellence's organic shampoo and what your drugstore shampoo is like. That would be the foaming and lathering that you experience from non-natural shampoos. This is because those contain harmful ingredients called sulfates. Sulfates are what create the lathering, foaming action.

Organic shampoo does not have lather up or foam. This is really different to get used to because at first, you tend to wonder if you've gotten all parts of your hair since you can't feel foamy suds all over your head. This also means using more product to cover your entire head. However, the benefits outweigh that greatly and you do get used to it in time.

The Wild Mint Shampoo and conditioner both have a light minty smell, probably due to an ingredient being peppermint oil. The smell is light and doesn't linger in my hair. After I've washed my hair and gotten out of the shower, I no longer get whiffs of the mint smell at all in my hair. Not that it would be a bad thing if I did, but just for your information, there's no smell.

I've taken photos of the Wild Mint Shampoo and the Wild Mint Conditioner in hopes of showing you what they look like. They really don't differ that much from any other shampoo or conditioner looks wise.

Wild Mint Shampoo

The Wild Mint Conditioner can be seen through the clear bottle. It's a white conditioner that looks much like any other.

Now, the best part of all...

Wild Mint Shampoo Ingredients

Purified Water, Olive Oil (and) Coconut Oil (and) Potassium Lactate, Vegetable Glycerin, Peppermint Oil*, Fennel Extract*, Hops Extract, Balm Mint Extract, Olive Leaf Extract*, Ginger Extract*, Mistletoe Extract*, Allantonin (Comfrey Root), Citric Acid, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Lemon Grass Oil*, Burdock Root Extract*, Sage Extract*, Rosemary Extract*, Grape Seed Extract*. *Certified Organic Herb

See those ingredients? All organic, all safe, and even better, they have really wonderful benefits for your hair that non-natural shampoos and conditioners do not have. The Wild Mint Shampoo and Wild Mint Conditioner are ideal for all hair types.

Also, notice that coconut oil is listed in the ingredients -- this is wonderful! Coconut oil has wonderful benefits for your hair. It can moisturize, repair and even repair split ends, add shine. Olive oil is also another very beneficial ingredient. Grape Seed and Rosemary extract can help with hair growth.

What the Wild Mint Shampoo does for your hair

-Protects against ultra-violet rays and air pollution.
-Moisturizes & maintains a healthy pH balance.
-Stimulates growth.
-Prevents hair loss.
-Restorative -- restores shine, moisture and body.

Wild Mint Conditioner Ingredients

Purified Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Olive Oil, Spearmint Oil*, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Vitamin E (Tocopherol), Olive Leaf Extract*, Ginger Extract*, Chamomile Extract*, Comfrey Root Extract*, Rosemary Extract*, Grape Seed Extract*. *Certified Organic Herb

Notice the conditioner also contains olive oil. As I said a few paragraphs ago, Rosemary and Grape Seed extract help hair grow. These ingredients all have super benefits for your hair, which is why I love this stuff!

What the Wild Mint Conditioner does for your hair

-Moisturizes without coating hair.
-Promotes growth.
-Prevents split ends and hair loss.
-Calms static electricity and frizz.
-Is deep conditioning.
-Makes her easier to manage.
-Adds shine.

Now I'd like to share my results after using the Wild Mint Shampoo and the Wild Mint Conditioner.

The first thing I ever noticed after I used Organic Excellence's shampoo and conditioner was the next day, when I went to flat iron my hair, it was so unbelievably easy! See, I usually wash my hair and then have to flat iron as soon as it dries because if I go to bed without ironing it, it's a total mess the next day and almost impossible to deal with! It's knotted up, the ends are so dry and split that they actually make crunching sounds while I'm trying to get my straightener through my tangled hair. It's really bad. And once it is ironed, it looks dull and the split ends are outrageous! It always takes me at least an hour to fully iron my hair if I've gone to bed without straightening after washing.

So the first time I used the Wild Mint Shampoo and Conditioner, I didn't get a chance to iron my hair before bed. So the next day, I dreaded even picking up my iron, but when I removed my pony tail, my hair was soft! No fluffed-up, crazy wild, hard hair freaking out all over my head. I ran my fingers through it without jerking my hair out. Keep in mind, I hadn't even put a brush through it. My hair is poofy and all over my head before straightening. So this was like a miracle.

It took me less than 20 minutes to completely iron my hair! This shampoo and conditioner made such an enormous difference that it's unreal. My straightener just glided right through my hair and there wasn't any tangling or crunchy sounds! And the split ends that normally stick out all over and are so horrible, weren't hardly even noticeable. I closely examined my ends after ironing it (the day after my first use of the shampoo and conditioner) and was actually shocked.

This is so surprising to me because I even use hair masks (natural ones!) and stuff to help with my crunchy, dry, crazy hair and still have hell getting a flat iron through my hair and never end up without the wild split ends. No matter how long I leave in my mask. So this was a big thing for me to see such a big difference. I actually thought my hair was just helpless and that it'd be that way forever since I'd used all sorts of stuff without it doing any good.

My hair feels smooth and even healthy. It has a bit more shine to it and it doesn't have that dull, dry look to it. It looks great and anything that can cut my ironing time down from one hour to less than 20 minutes is a BFF of mine!
