Like most
little girls, I owned a diary that came with a particular “accessory”
that promised to keep all my girly secrets under lock and key.
Yes, this “accessory”
that came attached to my (and probably yours, too) butterfly-laden diary was a
cheap gold lock and key.
Although I
guarded that key with my life, it’s no surprise to me now that my sister had
little trouble picking this lock with a
bobby pin, and revealing to herself all of my 9-year old hopes and dreams.
That
lovely memory was brought back to me when I saw that Avianne and Co. posted
about their Diamond Key Pendants on their Google+ page.
Last week, I talked about how the heart shape has been used as a symbolic love-gesture in jewelry (and everything else) for
ages, but it hit me that the stylish lock and key have also been big jewelry
trends.
I’ve seen lock and key designs printed on apparel, too, but they’re always
trendy and fashionable around your neck or wrist.
Even as a
kid, the lock and key jewelry was popular among girls, and used especially as gifts between “best-friends”.
Much like
the broken-in-half heart pendants -- where one friend gets one piece of the heart to wear
around her neck, and the other friend wears the other piece, usually etched with
the words “best” and “friend.”
Lock and
key jewelry pieces are also used amongst people who feel a close bond to one another, but
their meaning likely differs from the heart symbol, as the lock and key usually signifies that their loved one holds the “key to their heart.”
Most of the time, lock and key jewelry pieces are given as a gift as a metaphor,
a way to tell a lover that they have “unlocked” your heart.
Of course
you don’t have to receive the lock and key (or just lock or key) as a gift in
order to enjoy wearing it as a statement piece. It’s a popular and stylish
jewelry trend that doesn’t necessarily have to hold any meaning to it.
I know
people (men and women alike) who see beauty in the old key design, and I can’t disagree that it makes for an interesting jewelry piece,
especially when it’s encrusted with diamonds, like the 14 carat gold solidwhite gold men’s diamond key pendant.
To me, the men’s diamond key pendant featured above is stylish
enough for both genders.
I think the Diamond Key Pendant would make a nice, personalized gift
between two closely-bonded people when combined with what appears to be a
matching Unisex Diamond Lock Pendant (also 15 carat solid white gold). Both are available at Avianne and Co.

Perhaps the
Diamond Key Pendant for the male and the Unisex Diamond Lock Pendant for his spouse
(male or female since it's under “unisex jewelry.” )
I think the
lock and key pendants are a lovely gesture. What do you guys
think? Do you like the lock and key jewelry?
Do you wear
any like this yourself, and if so, is was it gifted (have any sentimental
value?) and does someone else have the other portion or do you wear it as a
statement piece only?
